Lawmakers Urge AG to Probe Pima County Recorder Ahead of 2024 Election
By Daniel Stefanski |
A Pima County elections official is facing scrutiny following concerns surrounding the administration of the recent November General Election. State Representatives Teresa Martinez and Rachel Jones have formally requested an investigation from Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes regarding Recorder Gabriella Cazares-Kelly’s management of the electoral process.
The lawmakers highlighted multiple issues, including the shutdown of the early ballot request portal, complications with the inmate voter registration program, and problems concerning undeliverable or returned ballots. These elements have raised alarms about the integrity of the election in Pima County.
“Election integrity is vital to our democracy. Voters must have confidence that their elections are managed fairly and transparently,” stated Representative Martinez. “The numerous irregularities and lack of accountability from the Pima County Recorder’s Office necessitate a full investigation.”
Representative Jones stressed the urgency of the situation, noting that nearly 4,000 voters faced obstacles in requesting ballots. “When concerns about unlawful voting and ballot processing receive no response, we must act to restore public trust,” she added.
In their correspondence to Mayes, the legislators emphasized the need for “free, fair, and transparent elections.” They referenced Mayes’s recent decision to investigate former President Donald Trump, urging that Cazares-Kelly’s conduct also merits thorough review.
Cazares-Kelly, who identifies as a Democrat, has been vocally engaged in political activities, sharing social media posts that include appearances with notable Democratic figures. This has led to questions about her impartiality in her role as an elections official.
As the situation develops, the call for a formal investigation remains a pressing issue among Arizona’s lawmakers, underscoring the critical nature of electoral integrity in the state.
