Popular arch at Lake Powell is gone

No injuries were reported as a result of the collapse, according to the National Park Service.

LAKE POWELL, Ariz. — The “Double Arch” feature in Rock Creek Bay at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area has collapsed into the water. National Park Service rangers confirmed the arch’s disappearance on August 8, attributing the collapse to variable water levels and erosion.

“This event serves as a reminder of our responsibility and need to protect the mineral resources surrounding Lake Powell,” stated Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Superintendent Michelle Kerns.

NPS reported that the arch was formed from 190-million-year-old Navajo sandstone from the late Triassic and early Jurassic periods. Popularly known as the “Toilet Bowl” and “Hole in the Roof,” this natural attraction drew numerous visitors who often shared photos of themselves jumping from the arch into the water.
