In a recent discussion regarding the impact of inflation and housing costs on young Americans, Kari Lake, a candidate for the U.S. Senate, highlighted the struggles many, including her own daughter, face in attaining the American Dream. She expressed concern over the Biden-Harris administration’s policies, stating that they have made homeownership increasingly unattainable for the younger generation.

Lake pointed out stark statistics from the Federal Reserve: in 1984, median household income was $22,400 with median home prices at $78,200. Fast forward to 2022, and while median income had climbed to $74,580, home prices surged to over $433,000, making homes roughly six times more expensive relative to income.

She emphasized the need for decisive action from elected officials to reduce housing costs and addressed the roles of interest rates and federal spending. Lake criticized current policies that allow excessive money printing, which she argued inflates costs and hinders economic recovery.

Another pressing issue is the shortage of skilled construction workers, with over half a million positions unfilled, according to the Associated Builders and Contractors. This deficit, combined with rising material costs, has complicated the construction of much-needed housing units.

Lake noted that rising energy costs—driven by limits on oil production and refining—directly affect building material prices. She also asserted that regulatory burdens imposed by the current administration contribute to increased construction costs, yielding little social advancement. Furthermore, she critiqued the push for all high school graduates to pursue four-year degrees, which has diminished the skilled labor pool available for construction work.

To remedy these issues, Lake proposed employing political changes to dismantle unnecessary regulations and bolster support for vocational training. She advocated for educational reforms, suggesting modifications to Pell grant guidelines to facilitate access to trade schools and advocating for expanded loan eligibility for technical education.

Lake believes it’s essential to increase federal support for trade schools through government partnerships and low-interest loans, enabling companies to enhance training facilities. She emphasized that investing in trade education is not only financially beneficial for individuals but also enhances the broader economy by generating higher tax revenues over time.
