Reports indicate that Kari Lake may soon transition to a role at the U.S. Department of State under Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This information comes from anonymous sources cited by The Washington Post and has gained traction among various media outlets, despite a lack of official confirmation from the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) or the State Department.

Lake, currently a Senior Advisor at USAGM, has been instrumental in implementing strategies aimed at streamlining operations across the agency and its affiliates, which include the Voice of America (VOA). According to an email from acting USAGM Chief Executive Roman Napoli, her efforts are focused on enhancing efficiency within the agency. If the unverified reports hold true, it appears there may be plans to dissolve the USAGM entirely, with Lake being assigned to the State Department to carry on her work.

Public reactions to these developments vary. Elon Musk, a notable figure in governmental discussions, voiced his stance on Twitter, advocating for a shutdown of USAGM and VOA, citing inefficiency and waste of taxpayer funds in his commentary.

The Washington Post highlighted that Lake’s potential move is intended to align USAGM’s operations with the State Department’s objectives. A source familiar with the situation stated, “She will be detailed over to State to accomplish this mission,” indicating a shift in strategy for the agency’s future.

In a statement to The Washington Post, Lake expressed her dedication to President Trump’s vision of modernizing how America’s narrative is conveyed globally. While she did not confirm her reassignment explicitly, she emphasized the importance of collaboration with the State Department. The use of “we” in her remarks hints at a broader integration of USAGM and VOA personnel into the State Department.

Lake’s commitment to reforming USAGM echoes sentiments shared earlier this year. In March, the agency announced her active role in adherence to an Executive Order aimed at reducing federal bureaucracy and eliminating unnecessary expenditures. One of her noted actions was the cancellation of an expensive lease for an unused high-rise in Washington, D.C., reflecting her belief that the agency is beset by systemic inefficiencies that pose risks to national security.

Lake’s candid remarks about the agency indicate her view that substantial changes are necessary. She has described it as “irretrievably broken” and acknowledged the challenge of reform, despite recognizing some dedicated personnel within its ranks.
