Today’s the first day to comment on ADOT’s SR 347 plans

A proposed widening project on State Route 347 is now at the forefront as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) launches a public comment period. This initiative comes as part of ADOT’s expansive $12.7 billion tentative five-year construction program.

The state plans to invest $1.05 billion in expansion projects, which will notably include $137 million earmarked for widening Interstate 10 at the Gila River Bridge. Among the key proposals is the expansion of SR 347, spanning 13 miles from the I-10 overpass to the city’s limits, currently classified as an “illustrative project.” This designation means that the project could advance if further funding becomes available.

Estimated at $235 million, the SR 347 project has already secured $90 million for the Maricopa County segment, which concludes one mile south of Riggs Road. However, an additional $145 million is still required. Recent legislative initiatives and sales tax revenues are being explored as potential funding sources.

Residents of Maricopa are encouraged to participate in the discussion. The 203-page program document is accessible online, and public comments will be accepted until 5 p.m. on May 23. Community members have five options to submit their feedback:

  • Attend the State Transportation Board’s public hearing on May 16 at 9 a.m.
  • Fill out an online comment form available on the ADOT website.
  • Email comments directly to ADOT.
  • Call the bilingual phone line for assistance.
  • Mail comments to the designated ADOT Communications office in Phoenix.

The State Transportation Board will finalize the program during its June 20 meeting, following the public input period.
