Is Maricopa’s LD 16 Facing an Impending Red Tsunami?

As the sun set three hours after polls closed, early results suggest a significant Republican advantage in Maricopa’s Legislative District 16. Candidates from the GOP are maintaining narrow leads over their Democratic rivals in key races.

Incumbent State Senator T.J. Shope (R-Casa Grande) is experiencing a notable double-digit lead against challenger Stacey Seaman (D-Casa Grande), with a margin of 7,100 votes or 12% in his favor. “The results are looking well,” Shope remarked, reflecting on what is now his third campaign term. He expressed gratitude toward voters and his commitment to continued service.

In the House race, Rep. Teresa Martinez (R-Casa Grande) stood out as the leading vote-getter, accumulating 29,327 votes, nearly 37% of the total. Meanwhile, incumbent Rep. Keith Seaman (D-Casa Grande) trailed closely behind, with only 3.4% separating him from his challenger Chris Lopez (R-Casa Grande).

Martinez, while optimistic, indicated the importance of patience as more results come in. “With only 7% of the vote tabulated, we’re waiting until at least 50 or 70% of the vote is in before we assess our standing,” she said, adding that she felt confident in her campaign’s performance alongside Lopez.

The dynamic between Martinez, Lopez, and the Seaman duo has been marked by strategic campaigning. In recent weeks, Martinez and Lopez have actively highlighted discrepancies in Keith Seaman’s platform, particularly regarding funding for State Route 347, projecting their assertion that his voting record does not align with his campaign messages.

The Seaman family, still hopeful, issued a joint statement reiterating their belief in the electoral process while awaiting final results. “While there is no clear winner yet, I am confident in our hardworking election officials as counting continues,” Rep. Seaman stated.
