The Sand Stone Fire, which began last Thursday, remains 0% contained, leading to a partial closure of State Route 87, commonly known as the Beeline Highway.
RIO VERDE, Ariz. — Firefighters are battling the Sand Stone Fire, located 14 miles northeast of Fountain Hills. The fire has been burning since July 25.
As of Sunday night, the blaze has scorched 15,000 acres, according to officials.
The southbound lanes of State Route 87 are now closed from State Route 188 to Bush Highway. This information has been confirmed by the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The fire’s origin was reportedly a lightning strike last Thursday night. Although it is visible from nearby communities, there is no immediate threat to Rio Verde, Fort McDowell, or Fountain Hills. However, residents should stay alert.
Approximately 200 personnel are currently assigned to combat the fire. Despite their efforts, containment remains at 0%.
The southbound section of State Route 87, near Payson, remains closed without an estimated time for reopening.
Currently, no evacuation orders have been issued for any communities. Authorities stress the importance of understanding the READY, SET, GO evacuation system, detailed on the Arizona Emergency Information Network website.
Although no evacuation shelters have been officially announced, residents should be prepared. Those in wildfire-prone areas are advised to have an emergency supply kit ready. This kit should include essentials like three days’ worth of food and water, a first-aid kit, prescription medications, and important documents stored in a waterproof container.
NFPA recommendations also suggest including items such as sleeping bags, battery-powered radios, dust masks, and a complete change of clothes in your emergency kit. For a full checklist, visit the NFPA’s official website.
