Hyundai, Kia recall over 208,000 electric vehicles to fix problem that can cause loss of power

Hyundai and Kia are initiating a recall affecting over 208,000 electric vehicles due to a critical issue that can lead to loss of drive power while driving. This defect significantly raises the risk of accidents, prompting urgent action from both car manufacturers.

The recall targets more than 145,000 Hyundai and Genesis cars, specifically the 2022 through 2024 Ioniq 5, the 2023 through 2025 Ioniq 6, along with the GV60 and GV70 models, plus the 2023 and 2024 G80. Additionally, nearly 63,000 Kia EV 6 vehicles from the 2022 to 2024 model years are included in this recall.

According to documents filed with government regulators, a faulty transistor in the charging control unit can become damaged. This malfunction may prevent the 12-volt battery from charging, which directly affects vehicle operation.

To address the issue, dealers will inspect affected vehicles, replacing the control unit and fuse as necessary. They will also perform software updates. Importantly, previously recalled vehicles that experienced the same problem will require a return visit to the dealer for corrective measures.

Notifications to vehicle owners will be mailed out in December and January, detailing the steps necessary for addressing this safety concern.
