Homestead director’s foster care documentary ‘I Am’ premieres this month in Scottsdale

A new documentary titled “I Am,” which delves into the challenges faced by the American foster care system, is set to premiere next week. Judy Nganga, a resident of Maricopa, plays a significant role as the assistant director and producer of the film.

“It was a journey,” Nganga remarked in an interview, expressing her enthusiasm for bringing attention to this crucial issue. “I believe every voice needs to be heard, especially those of the girls involved who can share their stories and possibly make an impact.”

The documentary features firsthand accounts from individuals who have navigated the foster care system, along with insights from advocates striving to reform child protection policies. Director Lillian Dweh, who spent five years in foster care beginning at age 13, was inspired to create this film after reflecting on her own experiences.

Dweh emphasized the importance of discussing the lives of youth both in and after their time in foster care. “Most of the time, people don’t really talk about what youth goes through outside of the foster care system,” she said. “The documentary reveals their journeys and what they face after aging out.”

The project gained momentum last year when Dweh reconnected with her former foster siblings. “I organized an event for them and told them about my plan for the documentary,” she recalled. Although the initial conversations were challenging, they ultimately found a way to share their stories.

Both Nganga and Dweh hope that influential figures in Arizona will attend the film’s premiere and advocate for necessary changes within the system. “This can make an impact for future generations, which is why I wanted to collaborate with Lillian,” Nganga stated.

The premiere of “I Am” is scheduled for April 19 at 5 p.m. at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets start at $25, and attendees will enjoy a red-carpet experience. For ticket purchases, visit the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts website.
