Following the passing of late U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva, Congressional District 7 is now a hotbed of political activity as candidates vie for the vacant seat. On April 14, three prominent Democrats announced their candidacies, marking the beginning of a competitive primary race.

Those in the running include Grijalva’s daughter, Adelita Grijalva, alongside Daniel Hernandez and Deja Foxx. Each candidate successfully submitted more than the required 798 signatures, with Grijalva leading the pack with a total of 1,812 signatures.

Adelita Grijalva expressed her enthusiasm, stating that she surpassed the signature requirement merely four and a half hours after her announcement. She believes her early success signals a desire for a candidate who can continue her father’s progressive legacy. “Nobody’s going to be able to fill my father’s shoes,” she remarked, emphasizing her unique perspective and individuality.

Before her candidacy, Grijalva served on the Pima County Board of Supervisors and the Tucson Unified School District Governing Board, amassing significant local political experience. Her opponent, Daniel Hernandez, also brings a rich political background as a former state lawmaker familiar with Tucson’s deeply rooted political landscape. Known for their moderate views, Hernandez and his family are recognized for fostering bipartisan relationships.

At a recent press conference, Scott Jones, state legislative director for a union, publicly endorsed Hernandez, highlighting his pragmatic approach to governance. Hernandez has also reported raising over $400,000, securing endorsements from organizations like the Arizona Federation of Teachers.

As the race unfolds, both candidates will seek crucial endorsements from various labor unions and progressive organizations. Adelita Grijalva’s campaign has already received support from prominent figures such as U.S. Senators Ruben Gallego and Mark Kelly.

The candidates have begun to divide the Democratic caucus in the state Legislature, with Hernandez relying on support from several state senators and representatives. Grijalva enjoys a similar backing among notable Democratic leaders, setting the stage for a robust contest marked by varying ideological perspectives.

With the primary scheduled for July 15, candidates must rapidly mobilize their campaigns as mail-in ballots will be dispatched starting June 18. Foxx, a newcomer and political influencer known for her role in Kamala Harris’ 2020 presidential campaign, adds another layer to the Democratic field. She positions herself as a fresh challenge to the traditional party establishment.

As each candidate positions themselves for the upcoming primary, the race is shaping into a clash between progressive and moderate Democratic ideologies, reflecting the dynamic landscape of Arizona politics.
