Grand Canyon University Marks 75 Years with Unprecedented Graduating Class

Grand Canyon University (GCU) has announced a record number of graduates in celebration of its 75th Anniversary, marking a significant achievement despite facing scrutiny from the Biden administration. This year, GCU will graduate 31,104 students, with 5,669 attending ceremonies in person at the Phoenix campus and another 25,435 participating online.
Commencement events for in-person graduates are currently underway, running from April 29th to May 2nd for online participants. GCU President Brian Mueller highlighted the dedication of students and the support from faculty, underscoring the university’s commitment to providing diverse educational opportunities. “Our flexible approach allows us to connect with students, no matter their circumstances,” he stated.
In addition to celebrating its graduates, GCU has focused on aligning its programs with labor market demands. Mueller reported that the university has introduced 148 new academic offerings across ten colleges. This move contrasts with trends at other universities, which have scaled back amid declining enrollment since the pandemic.
Recent controversies have included a $37 million fine imposed by the U.S. Department of Education. Critics, including the Goldwater Institute, argue the fine lacks substantive grounds. Arizona’s Republican Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Horne, supported GCU’s claims of federal overreach, insisting that the presumption of innocence should apply until proven otherwise.
In response to the accusations from the Department of Education, GCU expressed concern over perceived targeting. The university emphasized that the allegations are unfounded and reflective of a broader ideological agenda.
Amid these challenges, GCU celebrated its anniversary with a Week of Service, offering over 1,000 volunteer opportunities and raising around $1.5 million during its inaugural Amethyst Gala. The university aims to transform its local community through a comprehensive Five-Point Plan.
Currently, GCU’s enrollment stands at nearly 25,000 for traditional classes in Phoenix, with an additional 98,000 students engaged in online learning globally.
