GOP’s Push to Scrap Clean Energy Plan: A Blow to Workers and Arizona’s Future

The GOP’s efforts to repeal the clean energy plan are anti-worker and will hurt Arizona

As the labor landscape shifts amid the ongoing technological revolution, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) stands firm in its mission to advocate for workers’ rights. Founded in 1891, the IBEW has long championed high safety standards, competitive wages, and robust benefits for its members.

The sweeping changes brought by the Biden-Harris clean energy plan are generating a surge in union jobs that benefit both workers and the environment. However, political opposition is mounting, with some Republicans in Congress proposing to dismantle crucial elements of this initiative, specifically the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Despite these challenges, the fundamental goal of expanding job opportunities and enhancing energy choices remains clear.

Since the enactment of the IRA, over 300,000 new clean energy jobs have been projected nationwide, with aspirations for millions more in the coming years. Arizona alone has experienced the addition of 15,000 clean energy jobs and approximately $11 billion in investments, with expectations of attracting over $4 billion for clean power generation and energy storage by 2030. This translates into significant local employment and economic opportunities for residents.

Union jobs in the clean energy sector are witnessing an upward trajectory. The IRA encourages employers to implement workforce development initiatives and apprenticeship programs, enabling workers to potentially earn an additional $300,000 over their careers. Notably, around 75% of these newly created positions will not necessitate a four-year degree, allowing more individuals access to stable employment.

These jobs not only provide financial stability but also support families across the nation.

This plan is not a scam, and repealing it would pull the rug out from American workers. We need to move forward, not backward.

Moreover, jobs resulting from the IRA and the Biden-Harris clean energy plan have higher union representation compared to the broader energy workforce. These positions are often subject to prevailing wage standards that safeguard union gains and contribute to narrowing racial and gender pay disparities.

As an electrician and dedicated IBEW member, I commit myself to constructing a sustainable energy infrastructure and developing a more reliable grid. Renewable energy reduces harmful emissions that adversely affect our air quality and climate.

Additionally, investments in renewable energy can lead to lower electricity bills for families, particularly valuable during the summer months. Tax credits and rebates for installing solar panels or using energy-efficient appliances further increase savings, often facilitated by union labor. This synergy represents a clear benefit for all involved.

With the backing of the IRA and the Biden-Harris clean energy plan, the outlook for future job security in sectors like mine looks promising. It is crucial to maintain this investment in renewable energy to ensure its affordability and accessibility continues to grow, benefiting communities that require these resources the most. The goal remains to position America as a leader in modernizing its energy infrastructure.

At the IBEW, there is a continued commitment to advocating for a pro-union future and supporting leaders dedicated to this cause. In contrast, detractors like Donald Trump disparage the Biden-Harris clean energy initiative, calling it a “Green scam” at recent events.

However, this plan unequivocally is not a scam; undermining it would jeopardize American workers. Advancement is essential, not retrenchment.
