Funding Pact Advances Site Six Fishing Pier Revitalization Effort

The Mohave County Board of Supervisors has approved the allocation of $1.6 million in funding from the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act to replace the Site Six fishing pier. This significant decision paves the way for Lake Havasu City to formalize a funding agreement with the county, crucial for securing reimbursement for the project.
This funding initiative was greenlighted in August, following the city’s request and prior to a looming December 31 deadline for the county to utilize its remaining funds, which, if unspent, would have to be returned to the U.S. Department of Treasury.
According to documentation from the city, the existing fishing pier, aged 26 years, exhibits serious maintenance issues including rusting metal guard rails, deteriorating awnings, and structural concerns that necessitate replacement of the floats that support the ramp. The upcoming project aims to resolve these critical issues.
The pier serves as a popular fishing spot for both local anglers and visitors, providing access to several unique underwater habitats, including a notable Vietnam-era twinjet plane, the A6 Intruder, which the Bureau of Land Management placed in the lake in 2022.
“It is the perfect location for those who do not have a boat to enjoy fishing on Lake Havasu, and a great spot to take children and teach them how to fish,” stated Mohave County Supervisor Buster Johnson in a proposal to the governing board last month.
This project is included in the city’s Capital Improvement Plan for the fiscal years 2024-25. Initially, the $1.5 million required for the pier replacement was expected to be funded through a State Lake Improvement Fund grant.
Additionally, the Site Six area features a boat launch ramp that underwent upgrades earlier this year. Enhancements included the installation of a longer, less steep ramp alongside improvements to the access loop, seawall, and safety railing.
