Maricopa native Dante Westmiller gears up for a challenging semester at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, poised to make his mark both academically and athletically. As a freshman economics major recently named to the dean’s list, he reflects on his first semester, balancing college life with two part-time jobs.

The striking contrast between the balmy January temperatures in Maricopa and the frigid conditions awaiting him in Superior is stark. “Once it gets to 10 degrees or lower, it’s tough,” Westmiller shared, highlighting his appreciation for the sunny days in Arizona before returning to the cold Midwest.

Having graduated from Maricopa High School in 2022, Westmiller excelled on the baseball diamond, serving as co-captain and earning MVP honors during his sophomore year. This spring, he will take on the role of catcher for the college’s Division III baseball team while tackling more challenging coursework.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of balancing sports, school, and a job,” he said. This ambitious mindset reflects his aspirations for both academic success and athletic performance, emphasizing the discipline required in the real world.

Post-college, he envisions working in the front office of a professional sports team, a dream inspired by the film Moneyball. “I’ll be more in tune with my major and learning more about what I’m planning to do after college,” Westmiller noted, understanding the importance of laying the groundwork for his future.

As he prepares to dive into a busy semester filled with homework, baseball, and work commitments, Westmiller remains focused on his ultimate goal: earning his degree while embracing the journey ahead.
