Artists Collaborate on “Sonoran Sol” Totem Sculpture

New Totem Sculpture to Debut in Carefree This January

Carefree is set to showcase a striking new totem sculpture, crafted through a collaboration between the Sonoran Arts League and the Town of Carefree. This artistic endeavor celebrates the town’s 40th anniversary and features contributions from eight talented artists, all members of the League. The sculpture, titled “Sonoran Sol,” promises to enhance the town’s cultural landscape.

The 11-foot tall sculpture, weighing approximately 200 pounds, will be unveiled on Thursday, January 16, at 3 p.m. The location for this event is the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion at 101 Easy Street in Carefree. Following the unveiling, a reception will take place at the Sonoran Arts League Gallery, conveniently located across from the Carefree post office, at 7275 E. Easy St., Suite A104. The gallery will also host an artist reception and awards ceremony from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., coinciding with its new juried exhibition, “Different Point of View.”

David Court, President of the Sonoran Arts League, shared insights into the initiative. He was approached by Jo Gemmill, owner of the English Rose Tea Room and chair of the Town’s anniversary committee. Gemmill also serves on the League’s board.

“It was crucial for us to contribute to the community’s 40th Anniversary celebration,” said Court. “After discussions with our artists, we concluded that a totem sculpture would be the most fitting tribute. I am immensely proud of their collaboration on this remarkable public art project.”

The talented artists behind the “Sonoran Sol” sculpture include Marilyn and Terry Alexander, Eileen Pettit, Sylvia Fugmann Brongo, Robin Ray, Jenifer Oberle, Jeanne Anne Baughman, and Carol Fleming Marks. Their collective effort highlights the strength of community support for the arts.

The “Different Point of View” juried exhibition at the Sonoran Arts League Gallery will run through February 27, showcasing a diverse array of artworks including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, glass, fiber art, jewelry, photography, and mixed media.
