Former Manhattan prosecutor to represent suspect in killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO

In a recent turn of events, Luigi Mangione, 26, is facing serious legal challenges in connection with the December 4 killing of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare. Arrested on Monday in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Mangione was recognized at a local McDonald’s, leading to his capture.

Mangione has since added prominent defense lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, to his legal team. Agnifilo, previously a high-ranking official in the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, is now a partner at Agnifilo Intrater LLP. The firm released a statement confirming her involvement in the case but refrained from making comments at this stage.

Upon his arrest, police discovered Mangione in possession of a firearm, a mask, and writings that appear to connect him to the ambush outside the New York Hilton Midtown. Thompson was shot as he arrived for his company’s annual investor conference.

Mangione is currently detained without bail on gun and forgery charges in Pennsylvania, about 230 miles from New York City. His local attorney, Thomas Dickey, emphasized the importance of not jumping to conclusions about the case, adding that his client plans to contest extradition.

However, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg indicated that Mangione might reconsider this stance. “We will be prepared to proceed whether he waives or contests extradition,” Bragg stated during a press conference.

The charges against Mangione are significant, including intentional murder and criminal possession of a weapon. If he does not voluntarily agree to extradition, New York Governor Kathy Hochul is ready to request Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s assistance in issuing a governor’s warrant for his transfer.

Agnifilo’s background in the legal realm is noteworthy; she served as Chief Assistant District Attorney from 2014 to 2021 and has appeared frequently in media as a legal analyst. Her husband, Mark Agnifilo, is currently representing hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs in a separate federal case.
