First day of winter brings record warmth

Record high temperatures are expected to start the weekend in Phoenix.

On Saturday, the forecast predicts a high of 79 degrees, potentially breaking the 2023 record by one degree. This is a notable increase from the average temperature for this date, which sits at 65 degrees.

Calm and sunny conditions will dominate the weather across Arizona to kick off the weekend. In northern regions, temperatures will range from the lower to upper 60s, with Flagstaff reaching a high of 63 degrees under clear skies. Prescott, Sedona, and Payson are also expected to see highs in the upper 60s, while Globe and Safford might enjoy the warmth of the lower 70s.

The weather will shift slightly on Sunday as cloud cover increases, leading to a small drop in temperatures. However, highs will still remain above the seasonal norm, reaching the upper 70s in the valley and the lower 60s in higher elevations.

Looking ahead, another weather system is projected to move into Arizona on Christmas Day. Northern regions are expected to experience showers and high-elevation snow on Wednesday morning. While the rainfall in the lower deserts is not currently anticipated, some light showers cannot be completely dismissed. This system will lead to a gradual cooling trend as it departs, bringing temperatures back to average levels.
