Erie County Takes Charge: Residents Mobilize to Elect the Next President with Harris at the Helm
ERIE, Pa. — Vice President Kamala Harris drew a large crowd at a rally Monday night in Erie, Pennsylvania, a crucial area in the battleground state expected to play a significant role in the 2024 presidential election.
Addressing the audience, Harris declared, “You are a pivot county,” referencing Erie County’s historical tendency to swing between parties in presidential elections. “How you all vote often ends up predicting the national result,” she emphasized.
Harris focused her criticism on the Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump, urging attendees to scrutinize his recent speeches and events. She prompted the crowd to watch video clips of Trump discussing what he termed the “enemy from within,” including a statement he made on Fox News where he hinted at using military force against leftist demonstrators.
Erie County has consistently shifted its support in recent elections, swinging from Barack Obama in 2012, to Trump in 2016, and then back to President Biden in 2020 by a narrow margin. Harris’s visit marks her seventh to western Pennsylvania as part of her campaign.
Meanwhile, Trump held a rally in Upper Providence, close to Philadelphia, highlighting his efforts across the state. Early voting is underway in Pennsylvania, a key state among others like Arizona and Wisconsin that will shape the outcome of the election.
Enthusiasm filled the air hours before Harris took the stage, with long lines forming outside the arena. Attendees were treated to music and engaging speeches, including one from U.S. Senator John Fetterman, who underscored the importance of the county in determining the national political landscape.
During her speech, Harris highlighted her vision for the economy, focusing on tax cuts for new parents, first-time homebuyers, and entrepreneurs while also addressing corporate pricing issues. She pitched her healthcare policies aimed at expanding Medicare and providing care for seniors at home, which she tied to her personal experiences caring for her ill mother.
Harris voiced strong opposition to Trump’s plans regarding healthcare, warning that his agenda could jeopardize coverage for Americans with pre-existing conditions. “The seriousness of this cannot be overlooked,” she emphasized, recalling the impact of previous healthcare policies that allowed discrimination based on health status.
In closing, Harris cautioned against the potential consequences of Trump’s return to power, referring to a recent Supreme Court opinion on presidential immunity that could allow a president to act without accountability. “Imagine Donald Trump with no guard rails,” she warned.
In response, the Republican National Committee criticized Harris’s policies, particularly her energy agenda, asserting that Pennsylvanians would not support her approach. The Trump campaign echoed concerns about her position on fracking and her effectiveness with Black voters, despite Harris recently unveiling initiatives aimed at supporting Black communities.
