Enhanced Security Measures Set for Jan. 6, 2025 Presidential Vote Certification

Additional security will be in place for Jan. 6, 2025 certification of presidential vote

The U.S. Capitol Police have received a special security designation from the Department of Homeland Security in preparation for the Electoral College vote certification scheduled for January 6, 2025. This event is significant as it follows a turbulent incident during the same certification process in 2021, when a pro-Trump mob breached security and disrupted the proceedings.

During the January 6, 2021, certification, rioters, driven by unfounded claims from former President Donald Trump about election fraud, attacked the Capitol, leading to injuries among law enforcement and a chaotic evacuation of Congress members and then-Vice President Mike Pence. In the aftermath, federal prosecutors have secured numerous convictions against those involved in the assault.

Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger emphasized that the National Special Security Event (NSSE) designation will bolster their efforts to ensure the safety of congressional members and the legislative process. He noted that extensive preparations have been underway for several months, with improvements implemented over the past three years in response to past security vulnerabilities.

This NSSE designation is particularly notable because it marks the first time such a designation has been applied to the Electoral College certification process. Typically associated with high-profile events such as presidential inaugurations and State of the Union addresses, NSSEs enable a more coordinated security effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

As the lead agency for this event, the U.S. Secret Service will collaborate with various federal, state, and local partners to devise a comprehensive security plan. “National Special Security Events are events of the highest national significance,” stated Eric Ranaghan, the special agent in charge of the U.S. Secret Service’s Dignitary Protective Division. The focus will remain on ensuring the safety of the event and its participants.
