Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark is crowned the 73rd Miss Universe

MEXICO CITY, Mexico — In a historic moment for Denmark, Victoria Kjær Theilvig has been crowned Miss Universe 2023, marking the country’s first win in the prestigious competition.

Kjær, an advocate for animal protection and active in the diamond industry, triumphed over contestants from around the globe, including Miss Nigeria, who finished as the runner-up. Miss Mexico secured third place in the competition.

The event took place at the Mexico City Arena, which accommodates up to 20,000 spectators. The atmosphere was electric, with supporters proudly displaying flags and celebrating their national representatives.

The ceremony commenced with a vibrant performance featuring 131 mariachi musicians and singer Taboo from the Black Eyed Peas, who entertained the crowd with “Mexicana,” a song crafted by Emilio Estefan specifically for the event.

Hosted by a star-studded lineup that included Mario López, Olivia Culpo (Miss Universe 2012), Zuri Hall, and Catriona Gray (Miss Universe 2018), this year’s pageant witnessed participation from over 120 contestants. Notably, several countries, such as Belarus, Eritrea, Guinea, Macau, Maldives, Moldova, and Uzbekistan, made their debut in the competition.

This marks the third time Mexico has hosted the Miss Universe pageant, further solidifying its role in the history of this global event.
