Democrats celebrate with boisterous state-by-state roll call vote for Harris

The Democratic National Convention took place on Tuesday at the United Center in Chicago, featuring a ceremonial roll call of states. Delegates showcased their support for Kamala Harris with vibrant displays, including corncob hats, music spun by a live DJ, and even a surprise appearance by rapper Lil Jon.

This year’s tradition, which typically serves as a grand display of party unity, was largely ceremonial, as Democratic delegates had already voted virtually earlier in the month to officially nominate Harris. This decision followed President Joe Biden’s announcement to withdraw from the reelection race in late July, prompted by pressure from party members after his underwhelming debate performance.

The celebration kicked off with votes from delegates representing Delaware, Biden’s home state, and proceeded through various states and territories, culminating in support for the Harris-Walz ticket. The atmosphere was energized by a unique soundtrack, as the DJ played a different song for each state vocalizing their allegiance.

During Minnesota’s segment, Hans Storvick spoke passionately about vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, sharing personal anecdotes of his neighbor’s influence. “He taught us how to talk about global issues with respect, curiosity, and kindness,” Storvick remarked, illustrating Walz’s impactful leadership style.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, introducing himself as a representative of “the great state of Nancy Pelosi,” emphasized the state’s commitment to progress and unity. He highlighted Harris’ track record in fighting for various forms of justice, stating, “I saw that star get even brighter as attorney general of California and as a United States senator.”

The Georgia delegation added a memorable twist to the proceedings with a lively performance from Lil Jon, who energized the crowd with a rendition of his hit song before casting votes for Harris.

As the ceremonial roll call concluded, a live video of Harris appeared, beaming from a campaign rally in Milwaukee. “We are so honored to be your nominees,” she expressed, reinforcing the campaign’s grassroots foundation and vision for the future. “Together, we will chart a new way forward — a future for freedom, opportunity, optimism, and faith.”
