Dementia Campus Teams Up with Preschool for Innovative Care Solutions
In a groundbreaking initiative, two major nonprofit organizations in Arizona have united to enhance the lives of families affected by dementia and young children. The newly established Y-Academy Preschool at the Dementia Care and Education Campus, operated by the YMCA, aims to foster intergenerational connections.
The Y-Academy at Arcadia provides enrichment opportunities for members of the Adult Day Club, allowing both groups to interact meaningfully. “This is a vital component of the comprehensive, integrated care provided here,” remarked Debbie Shumway, executive director of Hospice of the Valley. She emphasized the positive impact of interactions, highlighting how they build community and nurture young children’s confidence.
Since 1977, Hospice of the Valley has focused on chronic illness and dementia care. Meanwhile, the YMCA has long prioritized the development of children’s cognitive and social skills. This partnership amplifies their outreach, supporting a broader range of families.
“This partnership is a dream,” stated Kirsten Gray, vice president of childcare at Valley of the Sun YMCA. She noted that the interactions teach invaluable lessons in empathy and communication. “It’s magical to see how the children engage with older adults facing dementia,” she added.
The preschool offers diverse activities, including art, water play, and music, specifically designed for children ages 2 to 5. A significant focus is placed on helping children build self-esteem while developing essential social and problem-solving abilities.
Intergenerational programming features supervised activities that engage both children and adults, encompassing music, movement, gardening, and dramatic play. The collaborative environment benefits everyone involved.
The Dementia Care and Education Campus is situated at 3811 N. 44th St. in Phoenix. For more information about the Y-Academy at Arcadia or to schedule a tour, interested individuals can contact Sara Meins at smeins@hov.org.
