Chandler Dog Hoarder Accused of Swindling $160,000 from Elderly Mother, Say Police
April McLaughlin, a Chandler woman, is facing serious charges including fraud and animal abuse after allegedly neglecting over 50 dogs under her care.
Recently indicted, McLaughlin is accused of misusing funds intended for special needs dogs. In September 2023, the Chandler police seized multiple dogs from her residence, revealing alarming conditions that led to some of the animals being euthanized due to health issues.
According to the police, McLaughlin operated a rescue organization named Special Needs Animal Welfare League. Through this entity, she purportedly solicited more than $47,000 in donations and supplies under false pretenses. Investigators further allege she exploited her elderly mother, stealing over $160,000 from her bank account and accumulating over $20,000 in unauthorized credit card charges.
McLaughlin now faces an array of felony charges, including theft, identity theft, and fraudulent schemes. She remains in custody as the legal proceedings unfold.
