CG Dems Chair Declares: “Martinez Isn’t Bothered”
In a recent candidate forum held in Maricopa, Legislative District 16 Representative Teresa Martinez (R-Casa Grande) sparked controversy by sharing her personal cell phone number with the audience, inviting constituents to reach out with questions. However, her assurance came with an important caveat: responses would not be provided until after the election.
This situation raised eyebrows among attendees, especially as one voter took the opportunity to question Martinez about the rapidly escalating costs of the universal voucher expansion, which now nearly racks up a $1 billion annual deficit in the state budget. The question seemed pertinent, indicating a need for transparency regarding how this financial burden would be managed over the years.
Martinez’s reply, however, was vague and unsatisfactory. She cited a policy of only addressing concerns in group meetings, with no plans to host one before the election. Additionally, she acknowledged that the inquiry came from a known Democrat, underscoring her apparent reluctance to engage with constituents outside her party base.
Martinez’s evasiveness is reflective of broader trends observed among certain candidates, including former President Trump and Kari Lake, who often rely on generalized statements rather than specific policy proposals. While they assure voters of improvements in their lives, details on execution remain conspicuously absent.
Carole Clark, Chair Emeritus of the Casa Grande Democrats, expressed concern about this lack of accountability. She urged LD16 voters, regardless of their political affiliation, to scrutinize the candidates they support. According to Clark, Martinez’s refusal to discuss the voucher expansion issue exemplifies a disconnect from constituents’ needs and concerns.
As the election approaches, Clark emphasized the importance of informed voting. She noted that those who share similar indifference towards these issues may find a fitting representative in Teresa Martinez.
