Carefree Park announces major step toward preserving 48-acres of open desert

Pristine Parcel of Sonoran Desert Recognized by National Register of Historic Places

CAREFREE — Carefree Park, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving 48 acres of open Sonoran Desert in Carefree, Arizona, has announced its inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. This designation, granted by the United States Department of Interior, highlights the area’s historical significance as the last segment of the 155-year-old Stoneman Road Military Trail located in Carefree.

The original 98-mile trail has largely disappeared due to urban development, making this well-preserved half-mile segment on state land remarkably significant. Surrounded by untouched Upper Sonoran Desert, the area features an array of healthy old-growth Saguaro cacti and diverse wildlife, including bobcats, coyotes, deer, and javelina. Visitors can enjoy unobstructed views of the surrounding mountains from the trail.

Wendy Mattes, co-founder and president of Carefree Park, expressed her excitement about the milestone. “It’s been a long process requiring tremendous due diligence. This designation is crucial for preserving this beautiful land for future generations,” she stated.

Mattes acknowledged the support from various entities, including the National Register of Historic Places and the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office. With gratitude, she thanked Carefree Mayor John Crane and others who contributed to this effort.

The next phase involves acquiring the land from the state through an auction process, with ongoing fundraising to support this goal. Mattes envisions the area becoming the Town of Carefree’s sole community park, featuring walking and hiking paths to provide the public with access to this extraordinary natural space.

Support for the Initiative

Arizona State Parks & Trails has also shown support for Carefree Park’s mission. “We look forward to collaborating to preserve this historical area for everyone’s benefit,” said Jeffrey Schmidt, grants program manager. He encouraged the town to pursue Land and Water Conservation Funds to ensure the land remains accessible for outdoor recreation.

The Historical Context of Stoneman Military Trail

The Stoneman Military Trail has a rich history, originating as an ancient Native American path used by the Yavapai and Apache tribes for centuries. Between 1870 and 1890, the trail served as a vital supply line for the U.S. Army between Fort Whipple in Prescott and Fort McDowell. Named after Colonel George Stoneman, who was pivotal in its establishment during his brief command, the trail serves as a testament to the region’s rich history.
