Brewer Field Takes a Paws for Canine Fun

The Sedona-Oak Creek School District Governing Board has approved a request from the city of Sedona to build a fence around the grassy area west of the Dr. Nancy Alexander Administration Building. This decision was made during their May 13 meeting to facilitate the creation of a dog park and host dog-related events.
Notably, Board member Lauren Robinson was absent from the meeting.
The property is situated across from Ranger Station Park and is leased by the city of Sedona, which utilizes it for both Parks and Recreation purposes as well as magistrate court activities.
City Manager Anette Spickard emphasized that the new fence will enable off-leash dog activities once construction is completed. She mentioned that scheduling and cost estimates are currently being worked out, as the project may not require a standalone budget and will draw from the maintenance budget.
Parks and Recreation Manager Josh Frewin explained that the fencing will allow the city to relocate its “Yappy Hour” dog owner events and activities for the Sedona greyhound club from the Posse Grounds Park softball field to this new location.
Installation of the fence is anticipated to begin in early July. Frewin noted that the initiative addresses sanitary concerns, as dogs frequently relieve themselves on athletic fields, leading to additional maintenance issues.
Public interest in a designated grassy area for dogs was a significant factor in the decision, as the fencing proves more cost-effective than expanding the existing dog park on Posse Grounds Road.
Frewin mentioned that the Yappy Hour group has found the current dog park inadequate in size, and the greyhounds require more space to run without the risk of interaction with other breeds. A usage schedule for the new area is being devised, with potential open access for general dog owners on weekends.
