Az voters can watch video debate over immigration proposition Thursday

A live-streamed debate on Proposition 314 will take place this Thursday evening, providing voters with insights into the controversial immigration-related measure. Republican State Representative John Kavanagh of Fountain Hills will present the case for the proposition, while Democratic State Representative Analise Ortiz from Phoenix will argue against it.

Proposition 314 aims to impose a series of new state laws addressing undocumented immigration. Among its provisions, it would grant authority to county and state prosecutors to pursue felony charges against undocumented immigrants for applying for certain benefits, and misdemeanor charges for using false documentation while seeking employment. Additionally, the proposition would enforce stricter legal repercussions for fentanyl dealers in cases of overdose death.

Supporters advocate that the measure is essential for border security; however, critics warn it could overburden local law enforcement and ignite constitutional challenges, echoing the repercussions that followed Arizona’s SB1070. A recent survey by Noble Predictive Insights revealed that 63% of Arizona voters support Prop 314, while 16% oppose it, with a margin of error of +/- 3.09 percent.

The forum will be broadcast locally at 6 p.m. on PBS 6 and NPR 89.1 FM and will also be available for live streaming on TucsonSentinel.com.

In addition to the Prop 314 debate, several political forums are scheduled to in the coming weeks:

On Thursday, September 19, candidates for Legislative District 17 will gather for a forum, where incumbent Republicans and Democratic challengers will discuss their platforms. This forum will be hosted on the Clean Elections YouTube channel at 6 p.m.

Following that, on September 26, candidates for the Catalina Foothills Unified School Board will meet at the Junior League of Tucson at 5:30 p.m. A similar forum for Pima County Supervisor Adelita Grijalva and her independent opponent, Val Romero, is set for September 28 at Quincie-Douglas Library.

October brings significant debate opportunities, including a rematch between U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani and challenger Kirsten Engel on October 7. Later that day marks the final opportunity for voter registration for the general election.

Further, Kari Lake and Ruben Gallego will engage in a highly anticipated televised Senate debate on October 9, coinciding with the mailing of early ballots from Pima County to voters.

As Election Day looms on November 5, voters are urged to stay informed and engaged through these forums and debates.
