Avery Johnson Powers No. 14 K-State to Dominant 31-7 Victory Over No. 20 Arizona

MANHATTAN, Kan. — In a challenging introduction to the Big 12, Arizona faced a defeat against Kansas State on Friday night, ending their nine-game winning streak. The final score was 31-7 in favor of the 14th-ranked Wildcats, who displayed a dominant performance, especially in the second half of the game.
Avery Johnson, orchestrating Kansas State’s offensive strategy, completed two touchdown passes and contributed significantly on the ground. Dylan Edwards electrified the field with a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown, showcasing the Wildcats’ potential as they improved to 3-0.
The matchup was set prior to Arizona’s transition from the Pac-12 to the Big 12, but it did not impact conference standings. Despite this, both teams aspired to prove their prowess on the field.
Noah Fifita threw for 268 yards for Arizona, but the Wildcats struggled to capitalize on key opportunities. Wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan had an impressive game with 11 catches for 138 yards, yet was unable to convert those receptions into significant plays or touchdowns.
Coach Brent Brennan acknowledged Kansas State’s strong defensive play, recognizing their strategic execution and hit on critical plays. “They tackle well and are impressive to play against,” he remarked.
The first half saw both teams exchanging lengthy touchdown drives, but also beset by penalties and errors. Kansas State’s Johnson faced criticism for a critical misjudgment near halftime when he failed to stop the clock, but still led his team effectively when it mattered most.
In the latter half, Kansas State seized control with two consecutive touchdown drives, solidifying their lead and demonstrating a well-rounded offensive approach. Johnson’s ability to extend plays was key, with notable throws setting up scoring opportunities.
Kansas State’s defense answered the challenge by holding Arizona to 324 total yards, a stark contrast to the performance against Tulane the previous week. Arizona’s penalties—including nine for 74 yards—further hindered their chances.
Looking ahead, Arizona will face No. 12 Utah on September 28 in their first true Big 12 game, while Kansas State prepares for a matchup against BYU next Saturday night.
This game showcased the competitive spirit of both teams as they continue to navigate their new conference landscapes. The remaining season holds potential for both as they refine their tactics and ambitions on the field.
