Arizona’s Olympians showcased their talents in various sports on Sunday, earning commendable achievements in basketball, archery, and more at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.
PARIS, France — As the second half of the 2024 Summer Olympics begins, Arizona athletes have already left an indelible mark. Gymnast Jade Carey clinched gold and bronze medals, skateboarder Jagger Eaton secured a silver, and swimmer Léon Marchand captured four gold medals in his home country.
Sunday witnessed further successes for Arizona Olympians. Here’s a recap of their performances:
3×3 Basketball: USA faced the Netherlands, with former Phoenix Suns player Jimmer Fredette on the roster. Team USA (2-5) lost 21-6, eliminating them from further contention. Fredette was sidelined due to torn ligaments in his adductor.
Archery: Brady Ellison from Globe, Arizona, advanced to the gold medal match after defeating Germany’s Florian Unruh in the semifinal. Ellison ultimately lost to South Korea’s Woojin Kim in a shootout, earning a silver medal.
5×5 Basketball: In the women’s group phase, Nigeria’s Promise Amukamara helped her team defeat Canada, 79-70, securing a spot in the quarterfinals. The USA team, featuring Phoenix Mercury players Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, and Kahleah Copper, triumphed over Germany 87-68, continuing their unbeaten streak.
Track and Field: In the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, ASU alum Regan Yee was eliminated after finishing last in her heat. Norway’s Beatrice Nedberge Llano also faced elimination in the women’s hammer throw. In the men’s 110-meter hurdles, Freddie Crittenden from Phoenix Track Club strategically qualified for the repechage after an injury.
In the men’s 1,500-meter semifinals, Hobbs Kessler and Neil Gourley, both training in Flagstaff, advanced to Tuesday’s final.
Water Polo: The Netherlands defeated Canada 20-11, with ASU’s Bente and Lieke Rogge contributing to the Netherlands’ success. Canada’s Blaire McDowell did not compete. France, with ASU’s Mia Rycraw in goal, was eliminated after losing to Greece.
Golf: Jon Rahm from Spain finished tied for fifth, starting strong but faltering on the back nine. Fellow ASU athlete David Puig ended tied for 40th. Scottsdale’s Wyndham Clark rebounded from a tough start to finish tied for 14th, while Nick Taylor tied for 30th for Canada.
Swimming: Léon Marchand added a bronze medal in the men’s 4×100-meter medley relay, while ASU’s Regan Smith helped the US women’s team set a world record and win gold in the 4×100-meter medley relay.
