Diamondbacks Edge Guardians in Extra Innings Thriller

The Arizona Diamondbacks inched closer to the top National League Wild Card spot, securing their 22nd win in the past 31 games.

CLEVELAND — Eugenio Suárez’s single in the 10th inning brought home Corbin Carroll, sealing a 7-6 victory for the Diamondbacks over the Cleveland Guardians on Monday night.

A sacrifice fly by Daniel Schneemann tied the game for the Guardians in the ninth inning, leading to extra innings. The interleague match featured four lead changes and five ties.

Back-to-back home runs by Ketel Marte and Gabriel Moreno in the first inning off Logan Allen set the tone for Arizona. Gold Glove catcher Moreno later exited the game with a left groin strain.

Ryan Thompson (6-3) earned the win despite allowing a run in one inning, and Justin Martinez recorded his first save of the season. Emmanuel Clase (4-2) saw his scoreless streak snapped with an unearned run.

José Ramírez led the Guardians with three hits, two runs, two stolen bases, and an RBI. Cleveland, boasting the best record in the majors at 67-45, also has the top home record at 35-18.

Andrés Giménez contributed three hits and two RBIs while Steven Kwan and Bo Naylor added two hits each for Cleveland. The Guardians used eight pitchers, including Allen, who was struck on the head by Randal Grichuk’s line drive but managed to retire the final 10 batters he faced.

Cleveland’s rotation is expected to strengthen with Alex Cobb’s return from left hip surgery. Manager Stephen Vogt indicated that Cobb will pitch against Minnesota this weekend.
