Arizona Congressmen Unite to Eliminate Double Taxation on Social Security

Congressman Abraham Hamadeh (R-AZ8) has teamed up with Arizona Representatives Andy Biggs (R-AZ5) and Paul Gosar (R-AZ9) to co-sponsor the Senior Citizens Tax Elimination Act, also known as H.R. 1040. Proposed earlier this month by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), this legislation aims to eliminate the double taxation currently imposed on Social Security benefits.
In support of the bill, Hamadeh stated, “Amid all of the FAKE news about Social Security benefits and the Democrats’ fear-mongering weaponization of it, I am glad to bring some REAL news to the residents of Arizona’s 8th Congressional District. Help is on the way.”
Hamadeh highlighted that before 1984, Social Security benefits were exempt from federal income tax. He remarked that the tax law established at that time is unjust and unnecessary, as it requires seniors to pay taxes on income they have already contributed to through payroll taxes.
Massie elaborated on the bill’s objectives, emphasizing that seniors are taxed on their Social Security contributions despite already having paid into the system. He argued that the legislation would relieve this burden and ultimately enhance the retirement income of millions of Americans.
Additionally, Senators Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) and Tim Sheehy (R-MT) have introduced similar measures in the U.S. Senate. Tuberville commented that in these times of rising living costs, imposing a second tax on Social Security benefits is particularly unfair to seniors who have paid taxes throughout their careers.
The Senior Citizens Tax Elimination Act has a history dating back to former Congressman Ron Paul, who first introduced it. Massie has continued to advocate for the bill annually since taking office in 2012.
In reflecting on the legislation’s origins, Hamadeh expressed his honor in supporting a bill initiated by Ron Paul. He praised Paul’s fiscal discipline and expressed hope that ongoing government efficiency initiatives will reveal further opportunities to reduce taxes for hardworking Americans.
“My colleagues and I are committed to delivering a ‘big, beautiful bill’ that will provide tax relief to all taxpaying Americans. The Senior Citizens Tax Elimination Act delivers immediate relief to those who need it most — our seniors who built this country,” Hamadeh concluded.
