Apache Junction Shock: Man Wounded as Suspect Crashes into Crowded Bar with Bomb-Like Blast
In a remarkable show of resilience, the Roadhouse Ranglers took to the stage just days after a tragic incident left many injured, including band member Sam Chunn, who suffered a broken foot. The band performed at VFW Post 7968 in Apache Junction, much to the delight of their fans.
The crash occurred last Saturday at Elk’s Lodge during a lively open mic night. Around 8:30 p.m., 73-year-old Thomas Kain allegedly drove his truck into the venue, injuring 30 people, with approximately 10 requiring hospitalization. Witnesses reported that Kain was intoxicated at the time of the incident.
“I heard a blast like a bomb, just a big boom,” recalled Chunn. As he turned, he saw Kain’s truck barreling toward the crowd. “He was plowing everybody over, going too fast, just crazy.” Chunn was knocked down by the impact and later discovered he had fractured his foot. The chaotic scene was filled with screams and terrified patrons, leading to moments of panic, especially for Chunn as he searched for his wife amidst the crowd.
Thankfully, none of the injuries were fatal. Chunn expressed his gratitude that his wife was unharmed during the incident. He also noted the community ties that ran deep among attendees that night. “One friend of mine got her elbow caught and her shoulder caught by the mirror as he drove by,” he added. It was also revealed that Chunn knew Kain personally, stating, “I’ve known Tom for 30 years.”
Law enforcement responded quickly, arresting Kain on multiple charges, including 12 counts of aggravated assault and 17 counts of endangerment, along with DUI. More charges may follow as the investigation continues.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Chunn expressed compassion for Kain, “If I had a chance to talk to Tom—and I will—I just, you know, I forgive him for whatever he did.” As recovery efforts proceed, Chunn remains hopeful for the well-being of everyone affected by the tragedy.
