Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Finalize 8-Year Divorce Saga
LOS ANGELES — Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have finalized a divorce settlement, marking the conclusion of one of Hollywood’s most prolonged and tumultuous splits. While the agreement addresses their marital and property rights, some legal issues remain unresolved.
A Los Angeles Superior Court filing on Monday confirmed the couple’s arrangement, reported initially by People magazine. Jolie’s attorney, James Simon, stated, “More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family.” He emphasized the exhaustion Jolie feels but expressed relief that this chapter is now closed.
The settlement includes a waiver of future spousal financial support but lacks specific details. A judge’s approval is still required to finalize the agreement, and inquiries to Pitt’s legal team went unanswered late Monday.
Jolie, 49, and Pitt, 61, were a prominent couple in Hollywood for over a decade, with two years of marriage. They share six children. Jolie initiated the divorce in 2016 following a private jet incident where she alleged physical abuse by Pitt, sparking investigations by the FBI and child services. However, neither agency pursued charges.
In 2019, a judge declared them divorced, yet the division of assets and child custody remained contentious. Despite a decision by a private judge granting shared custody, Jolie later sought to remove him from the case, leading to the restart of negotiations.
As their children grew, the need for custody arrangements diminished, leaving the 16-year-old twins, Knox and Vivienne, as the only minors involved. Recently, one of their daughters successfully petitioned to remove Pitt’s surname legally.
The couple’s decision to hire a private judge, a trend among high-profile separations, ensured that most proceedings remained out of public view. However, disputes surfaced especially in the context of Jolie’s sale of her shares in their French winery, Chateau Miraval, which Pitt claimed she sold without his consent. Pitt criticized the sale as vindictive, while Jolie argued that he was attempting to impose a non-disclosure agreement to conceal his past behavior.
This divorce settlement does not resolve their legal battles surrounding the winery. Despite their ongoing disputes, both parties have remained discreet about their personal lives post-separation, even amidst various promotional activities.
Following the split, Pitt has spoken about his past struggles with alcohol but has refrained from addressing the allegations directly. Meanwhile, Jolie returned to the film industry, both directing and acting, while receiving acclaim for her recent portrayal of opera legend Maria Callas in the film “Maria.”
