Andrew Cecere joins the Sedona Police Department

Andrew Cecere, a newly-minted police recruit in Sedona, reflects on his lifelong aspiration to join law enforcement. “Ever since I was little, I just was keen on the concept of being a police officer,” he stated. His admiration stems from his older cousin, a police officer who served as a role model. After enlisting in the Navy, where he gained valuable experience as a military policeman, Cecere returned to his hometown to pursue a career in police work.

A graduate of Sedona Rock High School in 2006, Cecere was an active student athlete, playing varsity tennis alongside his twin brother, John. His family, originally from Boston, moved to Sedona in the late 1990s. He later earned a degree in criminal justice from Arizona State University.

Training at the Northern Arizona Regional Training Academy, Cecere participated in a rigorous five-month program designed for recruits from multiple agencies. “It reminded me of boot camp,” he recalled. His military experience included duties like law enforcement and ID checks, which have boosted his confidence as he embarks on his new role.

After serving in the Navy from 2018 to 2022, Cecere moved back to Sedona with his wife, partly drawn by the area’s natural beauty and his fond memories of growing up there. A memorable experience during his time overseas was getting a panda tattoo in Japan, inspired by a playful street sign.

Cecere previously worked with the Department of Child Safety, focusing on adoptions. His work involved substantial travel and dealing with challenging circumstances. “I had 13 kids on my file and was able to get all but three adopted to good families,” he noted, highlighting the importance of thoroughly vetting foster parents to ensure children’s safety.

Reflecting on the changes in Sedona since his youth, Cecere observed a decline in the community’s youth population and sports programs. “Schools were packed when I graduated,” he said, mentioning the closure of local schools and the challenges families face in the area. His nostalgic hope of finding a favorite bagel shop met with disappointment as it had closed down.

During his downtime, Cecere enjoys dirt biking, watching UFC matches, and performing impressions of movie characters. “I can quote practically any movie,” he added, showcasing his unique talent. Looking ahead, he aims to build a long-term career with the Sedona Police Department after previously exploring various jobs. “When I had the opportunity to set up shop and do it in Sedona, it just felt right,” he concluded, solidifying his commitment to law enforcement in his hometown.
