ADOT Proposes Major Changes to Arizona’s HOV Lane Regulations

The Arizona transportation department has issued a warning to electric vehicle owners regarding potential changes to High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane regulations. As it stands, a current rule allows single-occupant alternative fuel vehicles, such as electric cars, to access HOV lanes without restriction. This exemption is set to expire on September 30, 2025, unless extended by federal legislation.
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) emphasized the significance of this potential rule change for drivers utilizing HOV lanes. Presently, the exemption enables vehicles bearing alternative fuel specialty plates to travel these lanes at all times, irrespective of passenger count. Alternatives include electric, solar, hydrogen, and natural gas vehicles.
While the ultimate decision rests with Congress, ADOT aims to keep drivers informed ahead of any modifications to the current regulations. Stakeholders are urged to stay updated as the deadline approaches.
