Public Sports Fieldhouse Proposal Sparks Community Debate
The City of Maricopa is embarking on an ambitious project to construct a $16.2 million recreational fieldhouse spanning 42,000 square feet, aimed at attracting local tournaments and enhancing sports tourism.
City spokesperson Monica Williams emphasized the expected timeline for the project, stating, “We are hopeful construction will begin this winter and take approximately 12 to 16 months.”
The proposed fieldhouse will be located on city-owned land at the southeast corner of West Bowlin Road and North Greythorn Drive, adjacent to the Copper Sky Multigenerational Center.
Plans include renovating the existing police substation to accommodate a gymnasium and fieldhouse, featuring basketball, volleyball, and pickleball courts, as well as batting cages. “We are in the design phase of this project,” Williams noted, indicating that adjustments to the design and cost estimates are still underway.
Assistant City Manager Matt Kozlowski highlighted the benefits of the facility in a recent address to the city council. He stated, “This project is designed to bring more court spaces to Maricopa, and it creates more opportunity for more sports leagues.”
The new fieldhouse is anticipated to become a hub for indoor events, potentially positioning Maricopa as a destination for sports tourism. The building is planned as a pre-engineered metal structure, adorned with attractive desert colors and patterns, reaching a maximum height of 42 feet. Before moving forward, the city must address zoning amendments due to its proximity to single-family homes.
To facilitate community engagement, three neighborhood meetings are scheduled to discuss zoning matters:
- 6 p.m. Sept. 12 at Maricopa Library & Cultural Center, 18160 N. Maya Angelou Drive.
- 6 p.m. Oct. 14 before the city Planning and Zoning Commission at City Hall, 39700 W. Civic Center Plaza.
- 6 p.m. Nov. 19 before the Maricopa City Council, 39700 W. Civic Center Plaza.
