Citing integrity, union support, ‘normality,’ Dems rally around Walz as VP choice

Democrats have swiftly moved to endorse Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate for the upcoming presidential election.

This decision has garnered praise from various influential figures within the Democratic Party. President Joe Biden, progressive U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and centrist U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, who recently left the party, all lauded Walz for his impressive track record and character.

However, Republicans were quick to criticize the choice, labeling Walz as too liberal. They argued that this selection indicated Harris’s unwillingness to appeal to moderate voters.

Upon receiving the nomination, Walz received a congratulatory call from Biden. “The first major decision a party nominee makes is their choice for Vice President,” Biden posted on Twitter. “And Kamala Harris has made a great decision in choosing Governor Tim Walz.”

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed her support in an MSNBC interview, highlighting Walz’s achievements as the top Democrat on the House Veterans Affairs Committee. Similarly, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama praised Walz’s record and personal integrity in a joint statement.

Walz’s appeal appears to stem from his reputation as a straightforward Midwesterner. Sen. Joe Manchin pointed out Walz’s ability to bring “normality” back to a chaotic political landscape, referring to Walz’s history of winning elections in conservative areas.

On the progressive side, Ocasio-Cortez emphasized Walz’s support for social issues, such as free school meals and expanded reproductive rights. She argued that Harris and Walz will govern effectively and inclusively.

Arizona Democrats, including Sen. Mark Kelly, also rallied behind Walz. Arizona Democratic Party Chairwoman Yolanda Bejarano praised both Harris and Walz’s track records on key issues like abortion rights and protecting democracy.

Republican leaders, including Donald Trump and Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, criticized Walz’s handling of the George Floyd protests and labeled the Harris-Walz ticket as dangerously liberal.

Potential Democratic vice-presidential candidates who didn’t make the cut, like Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, voiced their support for Walz.

Labor and climate groups quickly endorsed Walz. United Autoworkers President Shawn Fain praised Walz for his support of the working class, while the Environmental Defense Fund commended his commitment to addressing climate change.

However, the National Rifle Association criticized the choice, arguing that Walz would be detrimental to gun rights. The NRA noted Walz’s evolving stance on gun control since his time in Congress.

House Democrats were unanimous in their praise. Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke highlighted Walz’s bipartisan efforts and dedication to veterans, while former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer emphasized his effective leadership.
