The latest Vintage 2024 Population Estimates reveal a continuing trend of migration toward the American South and West. Twelve of the top 15 cities with the largest numeric population gains from 2023 to last year are located in these rapidly expanding regions.
Currently, Maricopa’s estimated population stands at 76,654, showcasing a growth rate that outpaces many larger, established cities in Arizona. As reported by the Arizona Republic, Maricopa ranked fifth in the state for raw population gains, while InMaricopa placed it second when adjusted for size.
Among Arizona cities, Queen Creek led with a 29% increase, adding 24,292 residents. Casa Grande and Buckeye followed with growth rates of 22.2% and 20%, respectively.
Last year, Maricopa held the title of the fifth fastest-growing city nationwide. The previous year, it ranked third in the West.
Maricopa’s swift expansion mirrors trends across Maricopa County, where the Phoenix metro area has become the fastest-growing county in the nation based on housing units. The county added 38,000 housing units between 2023 and 2024, outpacing all others in the country.
In terms of raw numbers, major cities like New York City (+87,184), Houston (+43,217), and Los Angeles (+31,276) experienced the highest population growth in the nation.
The South’s representation in the list of cities with the largest population gains is notably strong, particularly due to Texas’s robust growth. Houston, San Antonio, and Fort Worth stand out as some of the nation’s fastest-growing areas.
