Arizona’s Inaugural Romance-Only Bookstore Hosts a Night of Love and Melody

TUCSON, Ariz. — Four friends have combined their passion for literature and love stories by launching “Friends to Lovers,” Arizona’s first and only romance bookstore. This pop-up venture is designed to cater to romance enthusiasts throughout Tucson and southern Arizona.
The co-owners—Brittany Katter, Marlene Avelino, Shelby Webb, and Chelsea Elias—began their literary journey in December 2024. Katter notes that the all-encompassing theme of love is particularly resonant in today’s climate, where many are seeking solace from prevailing anxieties.
“Love conquers all is not a hard thing to sell,” Katter said, emphasizing the bookstore’s mission to provide a comforting escape through romance novels.
Webb, who was drawn back to reading via the influence of social media, articulated the store’s aim to re-engage people with literature. “We’re here to create a welcoming atmosphere for those looking to rediscover the joys of reading,” she explained.
Beyond selling books, Friends to Lovers seeks to foster a community where readers can openly embrace their love for romance narratives. Avelino remarked on the joy of introducing the genre to those who hadn’t engaged with it in years, noting that many attendees at their events were surprised by the diversity and depth of romance literature.
Interestingly, the co-owners entered the business with varying degrees of enthusiasm for the romance genre. Originally skeptical, Elias transformed into a devotee after exploring Katter’s recommendations. “I was a self-proclaimed snob about romance,” she admitted, now embracing the genre’s positive outlook.
This commitment to inclusivity extends to their book offerings. Each title at the bookstore includes a “trope bookmark,” which helps readers quickly identify the book’s thematic elements, making it easier for newcomers to navigate the genre.
Upcoming events include a unique collaboration with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, featuring a string quartet performance in the courtyard of The Temple of Music and Art. Attendees can expect an enchanting atmosphere filled with romance and music, alongside food and drink options.
Additionally, the bookstore has a “return a book” program that offers readers $2 off their next purchase when they return a previously bought book from a Friends to Lovers event.
