Maria Elena Cruz: The Yuma and Rural Justice Champion

Maria Elena Cruz, a Superior Court judge in Yuma County, has a unique perspective shaped by her community involvement. Known for her commitment to her constituents, she has now taken a significant leap to the Arizona Supreme Court, maintaining her small-town mindset as a guiding principle.
Cruz’s journey into the legal field began after a life-altering car accident. Her experience in seeking legal representation opened her eyes to the vital role attorneys play in championing individual rights. “Attorneys are servants of the people,” she reflected, revealing her inspiration to pursue a career in law.
During her time in law school, Cruz found herself in a prosecution clinic where she felt empowered to bring justice to those wronged. Her initial experiences as a prosecutor gave her confidence, but her transition to defense highlighted the fragility of individuals’ rights. Representing an innocent client accused of a drive-by shooting profoundly affected her views on the criminal justice system, forcing her to recognize the potential for wrongful charges.
Cruz approached her work with a desire to understand the backstory of each client. “I wanted to know that what I was doing was to a good and righteous end,” she emphasized. By empowering clients to see the possibility of change, she aimed to add value to their lives and the community.
Her experience as a judge in a rural setting enriched her perspective. Cruz implemented the SAFE program, designed to swiftly address probation violations, allowing offenders to maintain their jobs while completing required sanctions. Her commitment to fair treatment was exemplified when she interacted with a woman she had recently released from jail while grocery shopping.
Cruz intends to bring representation to those often overlooked by the judicial system. “People will see someone doing this work and looking like anybody else in the community,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of diversity in the Supreme Court.
Her deep-rooted connection to Yuma drives her dedication. Cruz remarked, “I am Yuma. Yuma made me.” Having the trust of her community is an honor she cherishes, solidifying her determination to serve as their advocate in the highest court of the state.
