GUHSD selects superintendent finalists

The Glendale Union High School District (GUHSD) Governing Board has narrowed its search for a new superintendent to two finalists: Matthew Belden and Dr. Gareth Diaz Zehrbach. This decision follows the announcement of current Superintendent Brian Capistran’s retirement, effective June 2025, after a significant 30-year tenure with the district.

Matthew Belden, the assistant superintendent of Operations and Athletics at GUHSD, brings 25 years of educational experience to the table. His background includes roles as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal. Notably, he has contributed to the Curriculum and Instruction Department, focusing on school safety and various improvement initiatives.

Dr. Gareth Diaz Zehrbach, an alumnus of Greenway High School, currently serves as the deputy superintendent of Administrative Leadership & Services for the Deer Valley Unified School District. His leadership extends across 42 schools, including five comprehensive high schools that have all attained “A” ratings, showcasing his commitment to educational excellence.

Community engagement is encouraged in the selection process. District faculty, staff, and residents can meet both candidates during a Community Forum scheduled for February 18 at 6 p.m. The event will take place at the Moon Valley High School auditorium, located at 3625 W. Cactus Road, Phoenix. This is an opportunity for stakeholders to gain insight into the candidates’ visions for the district’s future.
