Arizona’s Foolproof Plan to Prevent Illegal Voting: A Model for the Nation
By the Arizona Free Enterprise Club
The surge of border crossings has many voters concerned, especially with an election approaching in just over three months. One pressing question: can non-citizens vote?
It is illegal for non-citizens to vote. However, the debate centers around whether voters must prove their citizenship prior to voting. This issue led to the U.S. House passing the SAVE Act recently. Despite this, near unanimous opposition from Democrats means a federal proof of citizenship requirement has stalled in Congress.
Arizona, both a border and swing state, is pivotal in this national debate. Even Elon Musk highlighted the issue by sharing an image of Arizona’s voter registration form, which shows that proof of citizenship is not required to vote.
Arizona has implemented measures to address illegal voting more aggressively than any other state. In Arizona, if someone registers without proof of citizenship, they become a “Federal Only Voter” and receive a different ballot that includes only federal races. This ensures that: 1) the number of such voters is known; and 2) they do not influence state or local elections.
In contrast, the other 49 states do not require proof of citizenship and blend all voters onto one list, allowing them to vote in every election. As a result, these states are unaware of the exact number of non-citizen voters, potentially leading to a larger, undetected problem.
Additionally, a recent decision from the U.S. 9th Circuit will help Arizona prevent even more illegal voting, due to a bill authored by the Arizona Free Enterprise Club in 2022…
