Arizona’s Population Surge Fueled by Influx from Liberal States

By Daniel Stefanski |
Arizona has experienced significant population growth over the last three decades, driven largely by immigration from states governed by left-leaning policies.
Data released by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) indicates that nearly 1.5 million people moved to Arizona between 1990 and 2021. In stark contrast, states like California and New York witnessed substantial declines, with each losing over 4.6 million residents. Illinois lost approximately 2 million individuals during the same period.
This migration trend is not unique to Arizona. Florida attracted more than 3.7 million new residents, while Texas gained around 2.6 million. Such shifts suggest broader trends in domestic migration favoring states with different policy environments.
In an op-ed for Newsweek, Edward J. Pinto of AEI highlighted that progressive policies have contributed to the departure of millions from states like California and New Jersey. He noted that the net domestic migration from these states totaled 13 million, while Florida, Texas, and several others welcomed an equal number of newcomers.
Pinto urged governors of these blue states to implement policies reminiscent of those in successful red states. He advocates for tax reductions, crime control measures, deregulation, pension reforms, school choice, and affordable housing initiatives as means to retain residents.
Former Arizona Governor Doug Ducey reacted to the persistent homelessness crisis in San Francisco, attributing it to ineffective leadership. He commented, “For California residents who are tired of leaders who talk big and deliver nothing, there’s a simple solution: UHaul.com.”
Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen shed light on the state’s ongoing appeal, noting that roughly 200 individuals relocate there daily. He pointed out that many cite Arizona’s safety, family-friendly environment, and favorable business climate as key reasons for their move. Petersen attributes this phenomenon to the impact of the Republican-led legislature’s policies.
