Controversial Alterra house wins InMaricopa’s 2024 Holiday Homes on Parade

Maricopa residents recently celebrated the festive spirit through the 19th Annual Holiday Homes on Parade. Over a span of 25 days, community members enjoyed vibrant displays that adorned neighborhood streets.

Participants traveled via an interactive map or joined Ride 347 bus tours to view the entries. With a total of 33 homes participating, the popular vote has declared a winner.

Anamarie Sofia and Jeff McDonnell, who reside in Alterra, captured a remarkable fifth of the popular vote for their “Santa’s Workshop” display, located at 45197 W. Jack Rabbit Trail. This year’s contest garnered participation from over 900 voters.

The McDonnell family has lived in their home for five years, decorating it for the holidays each year. “My grandfather always did good holiday displays, and we want to continue the tradition with our son,” Jeff shared, emphasizing their commitment to family traditions.

The enchanting “Santa’s Workshop” featured sparkling lights, elves, and holiday projections. Their display evolves annually, with new inflatables and decorations added each season.

As corner-home residents, Anamarie and Jeff utilize the adjacent ditch to display their decorations. Despite receiving warnings during a previous contest, they assert that the area should be available for festive displays.

“They call it a common area, but it’s a drainage ditch; nobody goes through there,” Anamarie noted. Jeff added, “We’ve read through all of the CC&Rs, and there’s nothing that says we can’t decorate it to our knowledge.”

Although the couple has faced threats of $50 daily fines starting December 18 from their HOA, they have yet to incur any financial penalties. They seek a resolution to their situation, potentially through a holiday decoration permit or liability release.

This year’s contest was sponsored by Maricopa Realtor Dayv Morgan from HomeSmart Premier. Winners received a $300 cash prize, a $100 gift card to Native Grill, $50 for Amazon, $40 for Raceway Bar and Grill, and two vouchers for free pizzas from Rosati’s.
