New Legislation Paves the Way for a Green Electric Vehicle Infrastructure

Electric vehicle (EV) sales are witnessing a remarkable surge across the United States, with Arizona proudly ranking among the top 10 states in EV registrations per capita. Recently joining Arizona’s growing EV community, I have experienced firsthand the myriad benefits of switching to electric.

My recent trip to Tucson highlighted EV advantages, especially in terms of cost efficiency. Covering 217 miles in a single trip while using the air conditioning heavily, my EV achieved an average of 3.4 miles per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Utilizing Salt River Project’s off-peak charging rate of $0.09 per kWh, the trip totaled only $5.70. In contrast, with gas prices around $4 per gallon, this efficiency translates to an impressive equivalent of 155 miles per gallon, which gasoline-powered vehicles simply cannot match.

Yet, despite personal benefits, I recognize that a lack of reliable charging infrastructure poses a challenge for many Arizonans contemplating the shift to electric. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) is crucial in addressing this issue. This transformative legislation, in conjunction with the Inflation Reduction Act, aims to reshape our state’s transportation system, enhancing EV accessibility for all.

A notable aspect of the Inflation Reduction Act is its focus on expanding EV charging infrastructure, especially in underserved regions. Recently, the Air Quality Department in Maricopa County received $15 million to facilitate the installation of public EV charging stations. This initiative not only assists current and future EV owners but also significantly aids in reducing transportation emissions and improving overall air quality.

Furthermore, this initiative aligns with the Harris-Biden administration’s “Justice40 initiative,” which aims to direct 40% of clean energy and climate investments to disadvantaged communities. By prioritizing charging station locations in these areas, Maricopa County is making substantial progress toward environmental equity, ensuring that everyone benefits from the green economy.

Additionally, the Arizona Department of Transportation’s recent commitment to constructing fast-charging stations along nine new highways reinforces the state’s dedication to sustainability. These strategic investments are pivotal in reducing reliance on fossil fuels, improving air quality, and ensuring clean energy access for all Arizonans.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act represent a vision for a cleaner, healthier, and more equitable future. By enhancing EV infrastructure, Arizona is not only easing the transition to electric vehicles but also fostering an environment where clean energy is accessible to everyone.

I commend the Maricopa County Air Quality Department and the Arizona Department of Transportation for their proactive leadership, along with all congressional members who championed the BIL and IRA. Together, we are steering Arizona towards a sustainable and prosperous future.
