ZUZI! Dance celebrates 25 years of soaring & inclusivity

ZUZI! Dance is set to celebrate its 25th Anniversary Winter Solstice with an artistic showcase featuring dancers of diverse ages, backgrounds, and abilities. The performances will occur on Friday, December 20, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, December 21, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Leah Herring, the troupe’s marketer, noted, “ZUZI approaches dance as something that is for everyone.” Classes are designed for individuals of all skill levels, including those new to dance and aerial classes. The nonprofit organization offers contemporary dance as well as training in aerial silks and trapeze, all centered around the theme “Pillars of Light.”

The Winter Solstice is traditionally the darkest night of the year, and Herring expressed the theme’s intention: “Our theme is how to find light in the darkness.” This year’s celebration will emphasize trees and their strength, individuality, and interconnectedness.

Participants in the event include community workshop attendees who will perform alongside seasoned dancers. Herring highlighted the inclusivity, stating that anyone can join the workshops and participate in December’s performances. Artistic director and co-founder Nanette Robinson will choreograph the showcased numbers.

Guest performers, such as 520 Dance Company and Andrea Gudone, will join the event, which will also feature two community numbers, a youth performance, and a presentation by the University of Arizona School of Dance students. Live music from local artists will accompany the celebration.

Moreover, ZUZI! has partnered with Mariana de la Vega Art Gallery for a visual art exhibit, also titled “Pillars of Light.” Local artists are encouraged to submit artwork, reflecting themes of trees and their symbolism. The submission deadline is Monday, December 9.

Performances will take place at The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre, located at 738 N. 5th Ave. General admission is priced at $25. An open dress rehearsal will be available for the public to attend on December 19 at 7:30 p.m.
