In a poignant display of solidarity, the Maricopa Pumas youth football team gathered for a vigil at Copper Sky practice field last night, praying for two teammates injured in a recent car accident. Clad in their jerseys, players united with parents, teachers, and coaches, emphasizing community support as the injured continue to fight for their lives in a local hospital.

The tragic incident occurred on February 8, when a four-car crash on State Route 238 left six individuals hospitalized. According to the Maricopa Police Department, two victims sustained life-threatening injuries, including several children aged as young as five.

Organized by the Pumas’ all-volunteer coaching staff, the vigil aimed to offer hope and comfort. Coach Ryan Portee led the players in prayer and a symbolic run around the field, reinforcing the team’s bond during this difficult time.

Evangeline Cobb, CEO of Maricopa Pumas Youth Football and Cheer, participated in the vigil via a call from the hospital. She shared encouraging news with attendees, stating that one of the hospitalized players had opened his eyes, providing a glimmer of hope for his teammates and friends gathered.

“We’re all here for you,” said CFO Kellie Maruska, as she held up her phone to share the moment with the crowd. The emotional support resonated throughout the gathering, highlighting the community’s commitment to the recovering players.

In a show of support, the Pumas and The Lady Pumas cheer team crafted posters for the injured athletes, while parents rallied together to collect donations to assist affected families. Local city leaders also attended the vigil, expressing their willingness to help navigate through this tragic event.
