Yassamin Ansari prevails in CD3 Democratic race after recount

Yassamin Ansari has officially secured her position as the Democratic nominee for the West Valley congressional district in the upcoming November election, following a recount that confirmed her victory over Raquel Terán by a mere 36 votes. Initially, the results had Ansari leading Terán by just 42 votes, but the official tally revealed a final count of 19,084 to 19,048.

The seat is currently held by outgoing U.S. Representative Ruben Gallego, who is pursuing a Senate role. In her celebratory message posted on X, formerly Twitter, Ansari expressed gratitude for her nomination and called upon Arizonans to rally behind Democratic candidates. “It’s time for us to come together and ensure we secure victories for Democrats up and down the ballot this November,” she stated.

Ansari emphasized the importance of protecting abortion rights, advocating for an initiative aimed at enshrining these rights in the Arizona Constitution. She pledged to mobilize her campaign to boost support for both this initiative and her fellow Democratic candidates. “Today, I pledge to put my entire campaign apparatus behind these efforts to increase Democratic turnout in our district,” she declared.

Reproductive rights have emerged as a focal point for Democrats nationwide ahead of the elections. Pro-choice candidates in Arizona hope the ballot measure will galvanize voter support. During her time on the Phoenix City Council, Ansari championed progressive policies, including a resolution that limited abortion-related arrests amidst stricter state laws.

In November, Ansari will face Republican nominee Jeff Zink. However, given that Democratic voters in the district outnumber their GOP counterparts three to one, her victory seems probable. Should she win, Ansari would make history as the first Democratic Iranian-American elected to Congress.
