Why is X down? Elon Musk's social media site hit with multiple outages Monday morning

Elon Musk’s social media platform, X.com, experienced significant outages worldwide on Monday morning, causing frustration among users attempting to access the site.

Reports indicate that problems began around 5:30 a.m. Eastern Time, with users facing loading issues and error messages, including “Something went wrong. Try reloading.” As issues mounted, tracking website Downdetector recorded nearly 23,000 complaints within the first half hour.

The situation appeared to improve by 6:15 a.m., when many users regained access to their feeds. However, intermittent problems persisted, affecting some accounts throughout the morning. By 9:30 a.m., reports surged again, with as many as 40,000 users encountering difficulties by 10:15 a.m.

X has not disclosed the reasons behind these outages. Musk, who acquired Twitter and rebranded it to X in October 2022, previously made sweeping changes to the company, including a dramatic workforce reduction of about 80%.

In a related context, Musk’s management style has also impacted his role in government. He currently oversees a unit focused on efficiency, echoing tactics used during his Twitter takeover, such as demanding justification for employees’ work efforts. Recently, he emailed federal employees, requesting lists of their activities over the past week, emphasizing accountability.
