With Pacana Upgrades Nearing Completion, City Reflects on Park’s Rich Legacy

Pacana Park, Maricopa’s inaugural municipal park, has received significant upgrades in anticipation of its 20th anniversary this fall.
Located at 19000 N. Porter Road, the park opened its gates to residents in 2006. Since then, it has expanded alongside the growing city, with recent enhancements aimed at increasing safety, comfort, and recreational opportunities.
“The improvements total more than $130,000 in reinvestment into the park, not just to beautify the space but to ensure it continues serving the community for the next generation,” said Monica Williams, the city spokesperson.
Recent additions include a new dog park, two vibrant murals by local artist Mauriel “Mory” Morejon, enhanced railings and landscaping around the lake, a refreshed fitness court, and new trees. Upcoming improvements feature a permanent turf cornhole area with custom boards.
Pacana Park has historically served as a hub for community connection, offering activities such as fishing, softball, and events. Early photos highlight its role in hosting family gatherings and local celebrations since its establishment.
When the park opened, it was surrounded by undeveloped land, quickly becoming a focal point for civic life, including youth baseball and community events. “We had just incorporated in 2003, so this was one of the first major civic projects,” Williams noted. “At that time, it was the largest dedicated recreational space in the city.”
As Maricopa expanded, Pacana Park remained essential, facilitating annual events like the Pumpkin Walk and serving as the home field for many Little League teams. The park “laid the foundation for what public space could look like in Maricopa,” Williams added.
“Pacana remains special because it was first,” she concluded, highlighting its ongoing significance to families and the city’s dedication to keeping it vibrant and relevant.
